Each composition belongs to a marked style, with a different intention and an own difficulty. The simplest one is called hana and only utilizes the line subject and the object, which can be placed in vertical or in horizontal.
The flowers and vegetables that are chosen for each composition vary according to the style and the effect desired. By guideline, the subject line can be composed of one or various gladioli, lilies, branches of orchids, or branches of maple. For the object, a cove or a marigold would be perfect.
Symbolism. The oblique lines are very common in the Japanese floral art. Many times these are combined to draw different forms, each one with their own symbolism. The triangle is, for example, the fundamental form and represents the sky, the land and mankind.
In any corner. The decorative compositions of ikebana can be placed anywhere in the house or the office. On the contrary to feng shui, this philosophy does not offer any importance to the colors or the situation of the compositions inside a space.
Species. Bamboo and orchids, indigenous vegetables of the Japanese island of Honsu, are very much used in this decorative art, although also other species of plants are used, like gladioli, lilies, branches of maple or marigold.
Elements. The basic tools to create floral arrangements are scissors (the specific are called hasami), a backup with sharp points, to situate the flowers and vegetables called kenzan, and a container or vase.
Free. The style nageire is the most free one of the Japanese floral art. For its compositions wide vases of extended mouth are used. It is distributed in vertical, inclined or waterfall shape.
Benefits. Practising this art can bring many benefits to any who dares: it cheers up and contributes to a state of serenity. The time of learning varies according to the person. In Japan it is used to be around three years. In Spain the first schools of ikebana are opening up.
Different. The containers that are utilised for this technique are very free, they vary in size and form depending on the effect that wants to be created.
Placement. The style moribana, that signifies literally piled flowers, is composed on a round and flat container. All the assembly can go to the right (hongatte) or to the left (gyakugatte) of the vessel, besides vertical or inclined.
Conservation. So that the compositions last more remaining healthy and fresh the best is to cut the stems in oblique form and to do it always under water. This is the way the Japanese do it themselves in a technique that is called mizugiri.
